Club House Chemistry overated?

I just read a really good article from Bill Simmons on ESPN talking about A-Rod and his effect on the Yankees, and more generally, the effect a super star like A-Rod can have on a clubhouse. Something interesting to think about when we talk about the Mariner's improved clubhouse atmosphere (Or maybe percieved improvement at this point).

  1. Club house chemistry is often looked at as the reason a team is or is not successful. Nothing could be further from the truth. If your team is losing, it's not because your all-star right fielder isn't chattin' it up in the dugout. No, it's because you have a hack of a team that can't seem to put all of its talent [perceived or real] together at once. If team chemistry was an actual recipe for success, the Minnesota Twins would be winning the World Series every year.

  2. It's so media driven, everyone in the media loves to give credit to clubhouse chemistry because they love to give the image of a bunch of guys who all get along great and are fun to root for. It's similiar to guys who are percieved to be good clutch players. From ESPN you would think David Ortiz or Derek Jeter have never made a postseason out before. Or maybe I'm just still bitter about my full baseball career being forced to stand up in the duggout the entire game and scream encouragment at the batter knowing full well it made no difference.
