So who does that leave us with? Well, the M's aren't going to end up with that bad of a player in the #2 slot. The University of North Carolina's Dustin Ackley is well regarded as the best hitter in the draft with plus speed and above average defense. I'd look for the M's to take Ackley #2. The only question is where will he play.
In Ackley's junior season at UNC he played first base. But, he's too good of an athlete to have him at first. Many of the experts see him roaming center field or possibly even second base. Either way, this is a kid you can really get excited about. Sure, he's no Strasburg...but who cares.

I read the story on Ackley and it says he had Tommy John surgery, what last year? I've heard of him before and how great an athlete he is, but do we really want to spend Scott Boras $ on a potential injury case? I don't know...I say we take a pitcher and/or please let the nationals pass on Strassburg (I know they're not that stupid, but I can always hope...)
ReplyDeleteThat's why he's been playing first base this year, cause of the Tommy John surgery. But given that he's not a pitcher I'm not too concerned about the surgery. He'll bounce back and don't forget, we get #27 and #33 where we can always draft a high upside pitcher. Ackley's the one to take at #2.
